From Cairns to Racing Stardom: Peter Rowe Reflects on His Journey in the Sport of Kings

From growing up in Cairns immersed in the world of horses to becoming a trainer and race caller with a growing reputation, Peter Rowe has lived and breathed racing his entire life. His story is one of passion, resilience, and dedication to the sport he loves.

Growing Up with Racing in His Blood
Born into a racing family, Peter’s journey began under the guidance of his father, Trevor Rowe, who transitioned from training trotters to gallopers. “Racing was bred into me,” Peter reflects. “I loved being around the horses more than anything—the hours aren’t great, but the horses make it all worth it.”
Peter’s early mornings helping his dad and local trainers like Peter and Shannon Ryan laid the foundation for a lifelong career. “I vividly remember riding horses up and down the road to warm them up before jockeys took over. Those moments sparked my love for the industry,” he says.

Turning Passion into a Career
While Peter was always hands-on with horses, it wasn’t until a stint in banking that he decided to make racing his full-time career. “I realized office life wasn’t for me, so I started training more seriously, helping Dad while working at the bank,” Peter explains. Eventually, he earned his own training license, experiencing early success before joining forces with his father under a joint license.

“It’s not always easy working with family,” Peter admits. “Dad’s experience balances my modern approach, and we’ve learned to make decisions in the best interests of our clients and horses. Of course, Mum is the real boss—she keeps us in line.”

Career Highlights
Peter’s career is filled with memorable achievements. One of his proudest moments came with his paint filly, Splash of Paint. “I was told she wasn’t a real racehorse, but she proved everyone wrong by winning a country maiden at Gordonvale. It wasn’t just a win—it was validation,” he says.
As a partnership, Peter and Trevor have celebrated significant wins, including Smart Image’s victory in Brisbane last year. “It was a proud moment for our team. Now, we’re excited to see him step up to a Group 3 race this summer,” Peter shares.

Another standout achievement was winning the Cairns Cup with Chateau Dettori. “He was with us from his first start, and to see him win the Cup and still hold the track record is incredible. He gave our apprentices valuable experience and showcased Dad’s exceptional training skills,” Peter says.

The Thrill of Race Calling
This week, Peter adds another milestone to his resume—calling a race in Brisbane while also cheering on his runner, Loud Noise. “I’m excited but nervous,” Peter admits. “Calling at a new track and working with professionals like Josh Fleming and David Fowler is a great opportunity. Once the gates open, it should all fall into place.”

Vision for Cairns Racing
As a proud Cairns local, Peter envisions a bright future for the region’s racing scene. “I’d love to see night races on Fridays or Saturdays,” he says. “The cooler climate would benefit everyone, and the timing would attract more community involvement and international betting interest. It’s a step forward we need to
take.”

Peter also emphasizes the importance of fostering local ownership and encouraging young people to
explore racing. “More owners mean more people at the races, which strengthens the community,” he
says.

Community Connections and Hobbies
Beyond racing, Peter cherishes Cairns’ iconic race meetings at Oak Park and Ewan. “They’re a great mix of competitive racing and relaxed fun with family and friends,” he shares.

Hockey also played a significant role in Peter’s life, taking him across the country and abroad. While his
focus is now on racing and his farm, he still plays occasionally for fitness and fun.

Advice for Aspiring Racers
Peter’s advice to young locals is simple: “Hop out of bed early, get to the stables, and give it your all.

Racing isn’t just a job—it’s a lifestyle. If you’re passionate, it can take you anywhere in the world.”

Looking Ahead
As Peter balances his roles as a trainer and race caller, his focus remains on achieving winners and growing the sport. “I’m in no rush to take over the mic full-time, but I’d love the opportunity when the time comes. It’s not as easy as it looks, but it’s incredibly rewarding,” he says.

Outside racing, Peter plans to spend more time with his retired horses, Lickety Lachie and Desert Cowboy, at riding events. “They’ve given so much to me—it’s my turn to give back to them,” he adds.

With a bright future ahead, Peter Rowe continues to make Cairns proud, carrying the region’s racing spirit to new heights.
