The Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup Carnival 2024: A Boost to Local Economy and Community Spirit

Cairns, QLD – The Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup Carnival 2024, held from August 17 to 24, has delivered an outstanding impact on the Cairns region, attracting over 5,300 attendees and contributing $5.15 million in gross expenditure stimulus. As one of Far North Queensland’s most anticipated events, the Carnival continues to stand out as a cornerstone of the region’s social and economic calendar.

Over its four-day program, the Carnival drew 7,346 spectators, including 1,603 visitors from outside the Cairns region. Interstate visitors led the way, generating 2,959 of the 5,021 total visitor nights. The event’s economic footprint was equally impressive, with $2.8 million in direct and incremental expenditure benefiting the Cairns region and $3.5 million across Queensland.

Economic and Tourism Highlights
$2.5 million in overnight visitor expenditure.
$1.8 million spent on fashion and grooming, spotlighting the event’s influence on local retail.
$544,395 spent by local residents during the Carnival.

“Once again, the Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup Carnival has showcased Cairns as a vibrant destination for tourism and entertainment,” said Cameron Riches, General Manager of Cairns Jockey Club. “This event not only brings significant economic benefits but also unites the community in celebration. It’s an honour to host such an iconic Carnival that continues to grow year after year.”

Fashion and Entertainment at Its Finest
The Carnival isn’t just about horse racing—it’s a premier showcase of style and culture. Attendees purchased more than 9,600 fashion items, from dresses and fascinators to shoes and accessories, with local spending on fashion surpassing $1.3 million.

“Fashion and glamour are integral to the Carnival experience,” added Mr. Riches. “The incredible support for local businesses, from boutiques to hair and makeup artists, reinforces the Carnival’s impact beyond the racetrack.”

Community pride was unmistakable, with 95% of surveyed attendees agreeing that the Cairns Cup Carnival enhances the region’s appeal and 87% expressing pride in hosting the event.

Looking Ahead to 2025
The Red Beret Hotel Cairns Cup Carnival at Ladbrokes Cannon Park is set to return from Saturday, August 16, to Saturday, August 23, 2025. With planning already underway, the Cairns Jockey Club is committed to building on this year’s success and delivering another unforgettable experience for locals and visitors alike.
