Cairns Jockey Club is dedicated to raising awareness of environmental sustainability through our new sustainability initiatives.
In 2020, we will be introducing new initiatives to improve our operations at Cannon Park Racecourse. These initiatives are intended to achieve higher standards in responsible event and venue management, delivering tangible reductions to the environmental impact of our operations.
We are improving our waste management infrastructure and processes. Our main aim is to divert container waste from landfill to recycling facilities for sorting via the Containers For Change scheme.
We will be openly communicating with our members and patrons through racebooks, signage and newsletters, to request their support with our container collection program.
The Containers For Change scheme lets people receive a 10 cent refund for each eligible container returned to a refund point. We will be supporting various community groups and charities to ensure the container money goes back to the community. Selected charities will be advertised at container collection bins throughout the racecourse so patrons are aware of who they are helping.
So to help us improve our recycling efforts, give back to the community and keep our beautiful environment litter-free, we encourage all patrons to participate in this initiative.
More initiatives will be announced in 2020 – stay tuned!

Rehoming Retired Racehorses
Cairns Jockey Club encourages owners and trainers to keep their stable returns up to date and promptly lodge the notification of retirement form with Racing Australia. This data allows Racing Australia to better track the life cycle of racehorses in Queensland.
