The Cairns Jockey Club Committee and Queensland Racing Limited (QRL) today agreed in principle to a future partnership agreement which would see Cairns become a racing hub for Far North Queensland.  QRL acknowledges the financial turnaround the CJC has made recently and the new proposal would mean the CJC would change to a Strategic TAB Club, with additional TAB races.Upgrades for Cannon Park in future

Subject to a final agreement being reached and a review of the racing program, the CJC would be looking at 20 TAB Race dates & 1 Non-TAB Melbourne Cup Day from FY1112.  The return of TAB racing and additional race dates will be of huge benefit to the local racing industry & stakeholders.

This proposal would see CJC and Queensland Racing join forces as shareholders of a new company that will allow for existing infrastructure to be upgraded, track & stable upgraded, and on-course facilities improved for members and guests.

QRL holds the view that the racing industry should be responsible for providing quality racing and training facilities at facilities where TAB races are conducted. The Cairns Jockey Club needs to focus resources to improve the facilities and attract greater interest from race goers and enabling facilities to be exploited for non- racing related activities.

A similar model has been established at Corbould Park, Caloundra and QRL are partnering with other clubs to use industry funds on initiatives that provide increased benefits to the racing industry.

This proposal is subject to ongoing negotiations with Queensland Racing, approval by CJC members, and several other conditions.
